My Father (Poem)

I cried for years because of my father,

I kept men away from my father,

I struggled because of my father,

I wanted to get away from my father,

Yet life made it hard to get away from my father.

Then you came along and I was able to deal with my father,

I thought “finally someone who can handle my father,”

Yet I was proven wrong about you and my father,

It turns out that you too had a hard time with my father,

It turns out that you too ended up feeling powerless because of my father.

That’s why I say, “you can leave, you don’t have to deal with my father,”

You can walk away from my father,

Yet I can’t walk away from my father,

Yet I have survived the depression because of my father,

However, I’m not selfish enough to tell you “if you love me, deal with my father.”
